END ALL BE ALL. My tips on where to start your story.

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

One of the things I love about writing is that there really is no wrong way to do it. Often times people that want my help always want to know where they should start at and my answer is always the same. Start at the end. This may seem odd at first but if you stay with me I promise I'll make it make sense.

Your story is like a journey people take that leads to the end.

When I was writing my first book (click HERE to purchase it!) I had a very hard time getting past the first few chapters. I knew I wanted something really cool that would hook readers and get them to come with me on this awesome journey but my story would fizzle out and I found myself having no direction whatsoever. It wasn't until I realized that I wasn't focused on where I wanted things to go that I saw the error of my ways.

I thought about how I wanted the story to end. Not how I wanted the book to end but the ENTIRE story. I took a while to put it all down but once I knew where I wanted everyone to end up I had an idea about how I wanted them to get there. I've applied this method to all my writing and it has been a tremendous help.

Think about it this way: if you're taking a trip to someplace you've never been, having a map to guide you is helpful. You know where you're going, right? So that means you can plan your route to see the sights you want to see. It's the same thing with your readers! Having the ending in mind first will allow you to drop tiny crumbs for your readers to pick up and reinforce ideas you may have along the way. You might be leading them down one road just to throw them off and shock them with an unforeseen twist! Readers like feeling like they know what's going to happen. They want to put the pieces together and when they do they love the story even more!

Remember, if you know were you're going it'll be easier to get there. Map your story out and you'll find the journey to be much more pleasant. Enjoy!
